Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness

Leaving Fort William, we pass through Spean Bridge, Clan Lands and Commando country into the Great Glen, carved out by the last Ice Age. Where the mountains meet the three lochs, each loch is completely different to the others.

Our journey takes us alongside Loch Lochy (The Battle of the Shirts, The Well of the Seven Heads) and Loch Oich, smallest of the three lochs and very peaceful.

We travel to Invergarry, and on to Fort Augustus, following the Caledonian Canal as we go.

From here the road takes us alongside Loch Ness, and the chance to look for the Loch Ness monster (Nessie) before Castle Urquhart.

The City of Inverness, Capital of the Highlands, stands on the banks of the River Ness and the Moray Firth on the way to Culloden Moor and Cawdor Castle (time permitting).

The homeward journey takes us on the east side of Loch Ness by the military road, originally built in the 1700s, through remote glens and mountain scenery.
